Training Method
Positive Reinforcement (R+)
Positive reinforcement training is based on canine behavioral science, meaning it’s developed around dogs’ cognitive abilities and takes advantage of their innate motivations.
Positive reinforcement training changes behavior quickly and effectively, without yelling, threats, or punishment. The tools of the trade are toys, treats, lures, and other rewards, some as simple as being let outside in the yard or having the leash snapped on to go for a walk. Unwanted behavior is either ignored or a reward is taken away.
This type of training produces happy, confident dogs that love to learn and don’t fear their owners.
Who Recommends R+?
Every serious, reputable, informed organization and expert in the field of canine training and behavior. A few examples:
- The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior. AVSAB recommends veterinarians refer only to R+ trainers, and not to trainers who favor unscientific dominance theories and confrontational training. Read AVSAB’s position statement on Dominance Theory (PDF 2.7MB)
- Tufts Animal Behavior Clinic. See section on training.
- Humane societies across the country.
- Renowned trainers and behaviorists such as Dr. Ian Dunbar, Jean Donaldson, Karen Pryor, Terry Ryan, Pat Miller, Dr Nicholas Dodman, Trish King, Steve White, Kathy Sdao, Brenda Aloff, Victoria Stillwell, Pamela Reid, Pia Silvani, and many more.
