Have a Pet Problem? Let Nancy answer your questions.
Q. What can I do about my dog who becomes out of control when greeting people at the door? She jumps up and barks endlessly and will not quiet down for what seems like forever.
A.

Obedience is the key for a dog who is an over-enthusiastic greeter. Begin by teaching your dog a Sit-Stay. Gradually increase the length of time OR little by little increase the amount of distraction (called Proofing). When you feel your dog has a fairly reliable Sit-Stay, then invite your friends to come over on a weekend and practice having them ring the doorbell and entering the house. This will give you a chance to train your dog to do a Sit-Stay even in a highly distracting environment. When everyone calms down, then you can release your dog to say hello to everyone. At this point your dog will have also calmed down enough to be a courteous greeter. If your dog still is wanting to jump up, he should be ignored until all four feet are on the floor. As for barking, a good Sit-Stay is often all that is needed. The dog is concentrating on Staying and thus not thinking about barking.

But like everything, if you want your dog to maintain a good Sit-Stay, you need to continue to practice on a regular basis. Until you are ready to train your dog to Stay when guests arrive, be sure to manage you dog by putting him outside or in another room until he calms down. By continuing to let him greet people rudely, you are letting him develop a habit, which will then make retraining take that much longer.
